Why Italy?
The vast majority of bergamot grows in the picturesque Reggio Calabria region of southern Italy, an area famous for this fruit. This is also where doTERRA sources its Bergamot essential oil.
How does sourcing work?
Bergamot belongs to the citrus family. It is regarded as the most demanding citrus species and is thought to be somewhere between a lime and a grapefruit. Because of its bitter taste, the fruit is rarely eaten in Italy, although in Greece it is enjoyed as a dessert or with coffee. Bergamot has traditionally been cultivated mainly for its essential oil, but demand has increased since recent studies highlighted the benefits of consuming fresh bergamot juice. The essential oil is obtained by 'grating' the peel with a special device whose blades lightly abrade the rind. The device is submerged just below the surface of water so that, as the peel is opened, the released oil enters the water. At the end of the process the fruit emerges as a completely peeled sphere. The oil is then separated from the water in a centrifuge, through which it is processed at least twice.
