Bergamot is one of the most delicate citrus fruits, requiring a specific climate and soil composition to thrive. In Greece, the unripe fruit is eaten as a dessert with a spoon or alongside coffee. Bergamot is unique among citrus oils as it can be both uplifting and calming. It has been used for centuries to soothe moods and rejuvenate the skin.

Primary Benefits

  • Cold-pressed from the rind of the bergamot fruit, Bergamot essential oil is unique and perhaps the most delicate of all citrus oils, highly valued for its citrusy aroma.
  • Bergamot essential oil is often used in massage therapy for its soothing effect on the skin.
  • Due to its calming effects and delicate fragrance, it is frequently used in perfumes, lotions, body washes, soaps, and other skincare products.

Earl Grey and Bergamot

Did you know that bergamot is a key ingredient in Earl Grey tea? So, with Bergamot essential oil, you can enjoy a good cup of Earl Grey anytime you crave it! Just a few drops of oil can instantly transform any plain black tea into Earl Grey. When flavoring food or drinks with essential oils, always remember that less is often more! Start with a single drop and gradually increase the amount.

  • Apply to your skin during your shower to enjoy its beneficial skin-cleansing properties.
  • Mix with Fractionated Coconut Oil for a soothing massage oil.

Sourcing

Why Italy?

The vast majority of bergamot grows in the picturesque region of Reggio Calabria in Southern Italy, which is specifically famous for this fruit. doTERRA's Bergamot essential oil also comes from here.

How it works

  Why Italy

Bergamot belongs to the citrus family. It is considered the most demanding citrus variety, and it represents a transition somewhere between lime and grapefruit. Due to its bitter taste, it is not commonly eaten in Italy, although in Greece it is specifically consumed as a dessert or with coffee. Bergamot has primarily always been cultivated for the essential oil extracted from it, but since recent studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of consuming fresh bergamot juice, demand for it has increased. The essential oil is extracted by "grating" the rind using a special tool (which, similar to a cheese grater, pierces the fruit's rind). This grater-like tool is submerged in water, just enough to cover the blades, so that as they pierce the rind, the released oil enters the water. At the end of the process, the fruit emerges as a completely peeled, bare ball. Subsequently, the oil is separated from the water using a centrifuge, which processes it at least twice.

Maintaining Long-Term Partnerships

One of doTERRA's sourcing principles is to establish and maintain long-term partnerships with growers and distillers, based on solidarity and respect. Here's how we support our Italian partners through our long-term collaboration:

  • doTERRA's buyers in Italy are able to provide a reliable income for the growers from whom they purchase the fruit.
