Why from Brazil?
Copaiba trees grow in the tropical regions of South America, especially in Brazil, along the Amazon. The Amazon Basin experiences year-round humidity of approximately 80–85% and an average annual rainfall of 2300 mm. Being located on the equator, the Amazon rainforest receives 12 hours of sunlight every day of the year. These specific conditions create exceptionally ideal circumstances for the growth of Copaiba trees.
How does it work?
The essential oil is extracted from the oily resin of the Copaiba tree through steam distillation. Similar to the maple syrup extraction process, the Copaiba tree is tapped for its resin. The Copaiba trees growing in the Amazon region are inaccessible for six months of the year. However, from January to June each year, a rainy season sets in in the river region. During this period, the water level of the river and its tributaries rises by an average of six meters or more, making the Copaiba trees accessible by boat. Upon the first tapping of the tree, a certain amount of oily resin can be extracted immediately. After that, the incision made in the tree is sealed, and the tree is tapped once or twice more later in the year. The amount of oily resin produced by a Copaiba tree depends on the diameter of its trunk, the size of its foliage, and its position in the rainforest canopy, but on average, each tree can produce between two and six liters of oily resin per year. A Copaiba tree can live for up to 400 years, and its height can exceed 30 meters.
