Sourcing
Geranium grows beautifully and abundantly in both Madagascar and Kenya, where local small-scale farmers have been cultivating these fragrant, floral plants for decades. While geranium does not have high water requirements, it does not tolerate very dry climates either. And although creating the optimal environment for its cultivation is a real challenge, we have managed to find an ideal balance in Kenya and Madagascar. In Kenya, the plant thrives on the slopes of Mount Kenya. In Madagascar, the moderate and consistent climate of the central plateau provides suitable conditions for it.
The essential oil is extracted from the leaves, rhizomes, and flowers of the geranium through steam distillation. For the best quality and highest oil yield, parts of the geranium should be distilled simultaneously with—or just before—the plant's flowering. When the plant is in full bloom, it is already too late to extract the maximum amount of oil (or sometimes any oil at all). This is why the rhizomes and leaves are harvested just before the plant flowers. During harvesting, only parts of the plant are removed; some leaves are left to aid regeneration. To preserve its beneficial properties, the essential oil must be distilled within a few hours of harvesting.
