Sourcing
Ylang ylang originates from the island of Nosy Be, located off the northwest coast of Madagascar. The hot, humid climate of Madagascar is extremely favorable for the ylang ylang tree.
Ylang ylang trees grow quickly. They can reach a height of up to 12 meters, but to facilitate harvesting and increase flower yield, the trees are usually pruned to not exceed three meters. The essential oil is extracted by distillation from the small flowers growing on the trees. Ylang ylang trees must grow for three to four years before their flowers can be harvested for the first time, but after that, they will produce flowers for 30 or more years. Properly maintained trees yield up to 10 kg of fresh flowers annually. The mature flowers turn a yellowish hue when they are ready for harvest. Although flowers bloom year-round, the main harvest season is from April to June, immediately after the rainy season. Harvesters (mostly women) pick the flowers by hand in the early morning hours when the flowers open and their sweet scent becomes noticeable. Distillation of the flowers must take place within 24 hours of picking, otherwise they lose their aroma, and the yield of essential oil from distillation decreases. Distillation lasts 18–24 hours. Due to the significant amount of flowers required to produce the oil, the entire process requires a serious, collective effort.
